There are so many blogs and articles online to 'help' mums and dads with the BIG issue of baby sleep.
Seeing so many mums and babies in baby massage classes teaches you that every baby is different. What works for some babies, won't work for others. They develop so differently at different stages, that it's impossible to 'teach' them all in the same way.
However, it's interesting to read the recent article 'Why Newborns Hate Being Put Down.' In baby massage classes, we explain to mums that lots of babies have needs that are emotional, as well as physical. So when newborns cry, it's perfectly possible that they may be feeling very real emotions of sadness, missing their parents or anxiety about being separated.
This article talks about the theory of 'The Fourth Trimester' - when babies are looking to recreate the womb-like environment for another 3 months after being born. So by recreating that atmosphere (rocking motions, white noise, warmth) we can help babies feel more secure and more familiar with their surroundings.
Bear in mind that every baby goes through these periods and their behavior will change week to week, if not day to day, so be patient! Eventually, they will understand how to fall asleep without your help!
